Built to spec: a technical guide to Seaglaze ship windows

Built to spec: a technical guide to Seaglaze ship windows

Understanding the four systems, their glazing options, and where each performs best.

When specifying windows for a new build or refit, the right system depends on more than looks. Fixing method, glazing thickness, corner radius and finish all affect water integrity, weight, lead time and cost. This guide sets out the technical detail behind Seaglaze’s four marine window systems, drawn from Seaglaze’s own product datasheets, to support specification decisions.

Through Fix Windows — Series 1 to 5
The original and most established Seaglaze system. The superstructure or hull is drilled and the window frame fixed directly through it, with the fastening head visible on the outside of the frame.

  • Construction: solid aluminium extrusion, visible fixings
  • Corner radius: from as little as 50mm, or mitred corners
  • Glazing thickness: typically 4mm–6mm single glaze; options vary by series
  • Window types: fixed, sliding, half-drop, top-hung and multi-pane
  • Trim: box or flat internal trim available, secured with self-tapping screws for a clean internal finish
  • Best suited to: inland waterways, estuary and coastal cruisers, and refits where a proven, cost-effective fixing method is preferred

Series 1 is the lightest extrusion in the range, suited to inland and estuary craft. Series 2 to 5 step up in section size and load capability for larger or more demanding applications.

Clamp-In Windows — Series 10, Series 11, Clamp Shut Slider
All fastenings sit inside the frame body, so there are no external fastening holes — removing one of the most common sources of leaks.

  • Construction: clamp-in aluminium frame, fixings fully concealed
  • Corner radius: 65mm to 165mm (Series 10)
  • Glazing thickness: 4mm–6mm single glaze; up to 22mm in double-glazed units
  • Window types: fixed, half-drop, top-hung, sliding or hopper
  • Finish: powder coated, anodised, or a combination of both for added corrosion resistance
  • Fitting: quicker and less labour-intensive to install than through-fix

Clamp Shut Slider: designed specifically for ventilation at the helm position; tested to ISO 12216 Water-tightness Test Class 2; suitable for retrofit to existing GRP, steel or aluminium vessels, or for new builds.

Glass-Look — Hidden Frame, Concealed Frame, Direct Bond

Designed to give the appearance of bonded glass from the outside while retaining the practical benefits of a clamp-in system.

  • Hidden Frame (Series 15): frame concealed behind the glass; window can still be opened and the frame removed if required — something not possible with true bonded glass. Launched in 2013
  • Glazing thickness: 8mm–18mm single glaze; up to 22mm double-glazed; curved glazing and tinting available
  • Window types: fixed, sliding or top-hung
  • Water integrity: maintains the same standard as Seaglaze’s Series 12 clamp-in section
  • Concealed Frame: the newest system in this category, for an even more minimal sightline
  • Best suited to: leisure and commercial vessels — from day boats to superyachts — where a sleek, single-panel appearance and maximum light transmission are priorities

Plant-On — Horizontal Pop and Slide, Vertical Half-Drop Pop and Slide, Plant-On Hopper

The newest addition to the Seaglaze window range, designed to solve a specific problem: how to introduce ventilation into a direct bond glazing installation without breaking the flush, glass-look finish.

  • Concept: an opening window fitted within a fixed direct bond pane — effectively a window within a window
  • Configurations: horizontal pop-and-slide, vertical half-drop pop-and-slide, and a hopper unit supplied within a fixed pane
  • Best suited to: builds and refits using direct bond glazing that require openable ventilation without compromising the exterior appearance

Bespoke to any specification

Every Seaglaze window is manufactured to order rather than pulled from stock, using an in-house glass processing facility for toughened, laminated, heated and direct bond glazing. Custom shapes, curved glazing and non-standard sizes are all part of day-to-day production, backed by a dedicated technical team and Seaglaze’s ISO 9001-certified quality system.
